Being 5pm, my daughter and I were arguing over what we normally do at that time: specifically, dinner. She doesn’t want what I’ve cooked.

“But it’s yummy risotto.”

As we were in the bathroom, our voices were picked up by the acoustics of the tiles and I’m surprised our neighbours didn’t hear this debate – and all others prior. (At least, I hope they don’t.)

“I want to go out for dinner.”

“No. We’re cutting back on takeaway.”

“Why?”

Because if the world economy is going down the toilet and all the media is panicking and it’s only going to get WORSE! then surely by this time next week we’ll be drafting up a shopping budget on How the Family can Live off $50 and a bit of shameless dabbling in Freeganism.

“Because it’s expensive.”

“I want pizza. I —”

Now this is where she usually takes a deep breath and begins the list of essential pizza toppings and sauces. This time, she stopped. She stared at the toilet paper.

“Mum. Look at this. It is fabulous! So stylish.”

Indeed. It was a new ‘sea-themed’ pattern of little starfishes and shells.

She touched the roll with her fingertips.

The fight was forgotten.

……

For about 60 seconds.
