How things can change in the space of an hour. This morning, my mother called to say my father was admitted to hospital, but not to panic yet, she’d call me later. I needed to get out of the house, so went for a drive into the city, by which point Adam met me saying he’d been on the phone and that now the situation was I needed to hop on a plane pronto.

So here I am typing this, standing at an Internet console, as impatient businessmen tap their feet and wait for the plane to board; which it will, within minutes.

And I’m here typing, trying to fend off the hysteria. I’ve already burst into tears at the Virgin Blue desk, royally frightening the desk attendant I was buying the ticket off.

I don’t know what’s going to happen over the next few days; all I know that saying goodbye to my family just then was the hardest thing I’ve ever, ever done. I’ve never spent a night away from my babies before.

My plane is boarding. Cross your fingers for my dad, okay?
