First published in France in 2008, and then translated into English in 2009, Daddy Lost His Head is a delightfully cheeky book as one might expect from the hands of Quentin Blake and Andre Bouchard (Bouchard is a French cartoonist). I’ve seen one negative online review (and that centered on a perceived sexism in the text), but I’ve also seen many others written in the book’s defence – and I would be in that camp.
I think it celebrates family and reminds us to value each individual’s place and contribution within this unit, however it may be comprised or look like, because you never know when it may all change. In this book’s case, it is the daddy that undergoes a transformation – and a pretty big one, because he’s lost his head! Bouchard and Blake make the most of exploiting the kind of dramatics this scenario promises: I had to stop reading at one point because I was laughing so much.
Highly recommended!
