As my dubious gardening skills are no secret to anyone, I don’t suppose it will come as any shock when I say that after I wrote this post about our thriving tomato bushes I had several phone conversations with family members which went a little like this:
“I saw your photos. They did great while you were away.”
“I know!”
“So…”
“Yes?”
“How long did it take you for you to muck it all up?”
After a bit a bluster and “Hey, that’s not nice” on my part I went quiet and eventually mumbled, “Twenty-four hours.”
Yes, that’s right. The day after I took those photos I somehow managed to accidentally rip the trellis they were all growing on out of the wall. They slumped to the ground, some snapping in the process. I then panicked because I remember reading once, somewhere, who knows when, that tomatoes don’t like touching the earth and because my gardening knowledge is so spotty and seasonal I naturally took this on as gospel.
I shouted out to Adam to come out and help. He came out the back door, saw what was happening, shook his head in dismay, and went back inside.
The following day he used the staple gun to put the trellis (it’s only a plastic mesh) back up and apart from some damage, they have all survived! Survived! To the point we have Tupperware bowls full!
I’ll sign off with a quick photo. One of the types we bought is called Pink Pearl, released to benefit Breast Cancer research. It is certainly pink and at the start I wasn’t too sure what to expect. They looked more like lollies than tomatoes. But I’m happy to report they are delicious, too. I wanted to get a shot to compare the difference between the colours, but I just couldn’t get it right. The best shot is below.
The one on the left is the Pink Pearl. The one on the right is a regular Cherry Tomato.
