Quite by chance this week is going to be food-themed. I have some girlfriends coming over for lunch on Wednesday and (as usual) I am fretting a little at the prospect of betraying my poor cooking skills to those I regard. But I’m sure it will be fabulous!

As is the below:

greentomatochutney

If you recall, this is Liss’s green tomato chutney and by golly is it good. We had friends over for dinner on Saturday night and they added their compliments. My mother and I made it up on the last morning of her visit last week and I credit its success to her long experience in the kitchen.

Because look what monstrosity I create when I’m left on my lonesome.

green tomato mess

Agghhhh! The horror! This is the green tomato cake and I knew I was in trouble when Riley refused to lick the beater after I finished mixing up the batter. This is the child who would cross the desert in order to be first in line for such a treat. Even Keira, who is generous and tactful, made a face and said, That’s… interesting.

The recipe said chopped tomatoes. It didn’t specify dimensions. So I did it roughly. No. Bad Karen. Look above, it looks like jalapeno cake, or okra cake. What it did was split right through the middle.

When I tasted it hot (picking out the tomatoes first) it was… okay.

Then later when I tasted it cold. Oh.

Oh.

Gag-reflux overload.

Maybe all this would’ve been avoided if I’d put the tomatoes in the processor and blitzed them. I’m not sure.

You win some, you lose some!
