MILO recently approached me with the task to assess a ‘day in the life’ of our eating habits, to examine where we’re going right, and where we might need improvement. In many ways, I’ve done this at what might be considered the best and worst time: we’re coming off the rich, indulgent feasting of Christmas, but as it’s the beginning of a new year what better reason than to start with some bold truths. I was hopeful, if slightly apprehensive.

I’ve always appreciated how milk with MILO contains 25% RDI of Protein, and the Milo boosts the nutrient levels of Calcium by 70% and Vitamin A by a whopping 250%. Impressive. The protein factor is noteworthy, particularly in our case in relation to our examined day. Breakfast was raisin toast with butter and morning tea was a generous handful rice crackers. Lunch got better with ham and cheese on toasted sandwiches, but as I also ate what they did – in the interest of the study – I’m the first to put my hand up that by afternoon tea I was after something to sit in my tummy for a bit longer. A yoghurt in my case, and the kids had a smoothie.

Dinner was lovely, carb-high pasta: beef ravioli with a tomato sauce (both store bought). As we’re not huge salad eaters, I usually try to cook vegetables to throw in with the pasta, such as peas, corn and small florets of cauliflower and broccoli. But on this particular night? Um, no. That didn’t happen. So, all up, on this particular day I can see some nutritional holes in regards to certain vitamins, perhaps even iron. This is an atypical example of what normally happens around here, but as I said earlier, we’re still coming off Christmas, and that includes the leftovers. Dessert might be plum pudding and custard, or just custard, or a glass of milk and MILO before bed (our usual).

It’s holiday time, so I’m not too worried. More rigid meal planning and shopping is just around the corner. And in truth, I’m glad. It’s certainly a help, and I never say no to help.
