The tragic events of the Sydney siege earlier in the week has sent a potent reminder to not only myself, but I think the rest of the country, about the important things in life: to not take it for granted, to tell our family and friends how much we love them, to not close our hearts at such times, but to keep them open. How compassion is a powerful and beautiful thing. Coming into Christmas, many of our thoughts turn this way anyway, but I think this year most people will be especially aware and appreciative – I know I will be.

Those of you who read via feeds, or who haven’t been around on social media much (like me), and assuming this feed is still working (!), might not know that this site has begun a transformation this week, too. Miscellaneous Mum is now Karen Andrews. I’ve changed URLs. This is the ‘soft’ launch: I’m still tweaking behind the scenes, and besides, given what’s happened, it hasn’t felt right to make a big song and dance about it. That time will come.

I will sign off for the year at this point. I’ve been planning for 2015 and – spoilers – I’m excited! But before I go, I have a couple reminders. First, there’s two giveaways: one for Kelly Exeter’s book Your Best Year Yet and another for a family pass to Melbourne Aquarium. And last, if you haven’t commented on this blog this year, to please do so for my Christmas Card Challenge.

Wishing you all the best for the holiday season. Stay safe and see you soon.
