This year-long Friday celebrations series is my way of documenting the good things that have passed my way during the week and being mindful of these, and more.
We spent a day in the garden yesterday, weeding, planting and mulching. Spent a couple of hours doing the same thing the day before that as well, actually, so my annual quota of gardening time is well and truly up. I bask in the neat loveliness for about a month before things start to revert back to normal, so I’m going to enjoy that.
What else am I celebrating this week?
- My mother has been visiting, so we’ve been eating more than our usual amount of baked goods and desserts.
- It’s a public holiday in Victoria today, something that’s crept up on me as I kept forgetting it was a real thing. When I’ve talked about it with other people, the overriding impression I’ve gotten is one of bemusement and annoyance (from shop owners); I’m still deciding how I feel about it, although I admit the extra significance gives the occasion a whiff of ‘Christmas Eve-ness’ about it, excitement ahead of the big day of grand final AFL football.
- Speaking of Christmas, news broke during the week of the plan to open the Warner Bros. Studio for an extra special (early) Christmas dinner in the Hogwarts Great Hall. What a treat for Harry Potter fans! The bad news is it sold out straight away, which is hardly surprising. Visiting the Warner Bros. Harry Potter studio tour was one of my favourite things when we were in London earlier this year.
- It’s banned books week. Some of my best – and certainly most memorable! – reading experiences have been reading previously banned books, such as Lady Chatterley’s Lover, American Psycho, The Well of Loneliness, A Farewell to Arms, Brave New World, Lolita, The Trial of Lady Chatterley, The 120 Days of Sodom, The Catcher in the Rye and more. I own a fair few too! The University of Melbourne website has a list of books that have been banned in Australia if you’d like to count how many you’ve read.
