writing

The above picture was taken on the day I was re-writing my picture book. I was working off the existing manuscript on my laptop screen and then writing (by hand) on paper the elements I wanted to keep, thus leaving a very different book than it was before. I can only do this with a story that I’ve left alone long enough that I’m prepared to get quite tough with it; anything less and I get a bit timid and precious.

I think it’s much stronger now and is definitely on course! Which is exciting.

Anyway, moving on from writing process …  to writing news.

National Young Writers Festival

National Young Writers Festival

This will be the 16th year of the National Young Writers Festival. Held in Newcastle, it is a somewhat legendary and beloved event of writers. There’s a running joke that most of that population demographic in Melbourne has a temporary exodus to NSW when it is on, and many a famous name had their start there. So you can imagine the glee when I was invited to participate!

I’ll be doing two sessions:

The Business of Taking a Blog to a Book

What happens when your blog becomes a book? Does blog success necessarily entail a bestseller? Four writers discuss the process of transforming their work from WordPress to printing press.

With Karen Andrews, Lorelei Vashti, Becky Crew, and Summer Land.

and

Wind Beneath my Wings (love it!)

Did these guys ever know they were your hero? Now’s the time to tell them. This special paired mentoring program gives you the chance to spend some quality time learning from a pro. Advanced bookings required, please email info@youngwritersfestival.org by September 19th with your preferred mentor and a 30-word reason why you deserve a spot.

With Karen Andrews (blogger), Ronnie Scott (author; founder, The Lifted Brow), Lisa Dempster (Director/CEO, Melbourne Writers’ Festival), Benjamin Law (writer), Nadia Saccardo (Editor, Smith Journal), Elmo Keep (non-fiction writer; Digital Director The Lifted Brow).

So, so cool right? If you’re in the area come on down, Price-is-Right-style, because all core events are FREE.

Crying in the Car - smallWhile I’m in town, on Wednesday 2nd October, I will be holding a NSW launch for Crying in the Car. A few people have already told me they’re coming – hurrah! If you’re in the area I’d love to see you there.

There’s an event page created by the wonderful Maclean’s Bookshop, where it will be held, if you need more information.

Exciting times!

I best get back to work.

Naturally, if you have any questions, leave it in the comments or shoot me an email!
