Welcome to my annual series of book posts of recommendations for Christmas (or special occasions).
As ever, if you’re after a very special present for a baby or young child, you can’t go past picture books. I love them and my two still read them on occasion – especially if it’s an old favourite.
Speaking of old favourites, one is There Are No Cats In This Book and so I was very pleased when I came across a companion title Is There a Dog in This Book? They’re bright, playful stories with a lot of flaps and cutouts to keep kids entertained as they race to turn the pages. The series of books has been around for a while – and that’s a good thing because it’s an indication of endurance and worth.
Here’s a power duo: Michael Rosen and Chris Riddell. And they’ve put together a book of poetry called A Great Big Cuddle: poems for the very young. Anyone who knows me will know that I find this exciting because I love poetry. I admit I haven’t read it cover to cover, but I have picked it up to flick through. It’s a decent size – both in length and dimensions, perfect for reading to a child because it opens wide and they feel involved in the reading experience too. Gret for Christmas and also for a birth present. I received a lot of what I call ‘legacy’ texts when the kids were born, collectors and extra-special editions of classic books. This would also suit.
Allen and Unwin sent me the At the Beach: Book and 150 piece puzzle box set and Riley saw it and immediately checked it out, ripping off the plastic to get a better look. So I think we can declare that a marketing win! This clever packaging puts the At the Beach picture book and a 150 piece puzzle together and would be a perfect present for a child who might need a little ‘more’ than what a book alone can offer. At a great price.
No Christmas post about picture book suggestions would be complete without featuring a one with drop-gorgeous illustrations and – again – Freya Blackwood has shown she is up among the world’s best with Perfect. Featuring the talents of CBCA shortlisted author Danny Parker, this is a “balm for the soul” story of a long summer day. Ah, I feel more relaxed just thinking about it.
It’s also pretty special to feature a new release from another Australian favourite, Graeme Base. His book is called Eye to Eye and here is the blurb: “Come eye to eye with some of nature’s most impressive creatures as Graeme Base takes you on a richly illustrated journey of imagination and possibility.” Fans of his distinctive lush, vivid style will not be disappointed.
