2012!

While the others were swimming yesterday I went to lie down outside under the trees at the pool and began typing away on the new iPad. The plan is to sync up files to Dropbox and see if that will be a viable way to write. The day before, I walked to the library in the heat with only the iPad tucked into my handbag. I can’t tell you how much better that feels than to haul around my big, bulky, HP laptop. Even better, the old-fashioned ‘clacky-clacky’ sound of the keys is curiously soothing; I think it’s placating your subconscious into thinking it’s being productive (“Listen to you go! GENIUS!”) whether or not what it’s throwing out is actually any good or not. Which is usually isn’t: shitty first drafts, and all that.

I’ve also been giving a few exercises out of this Edward de Bono book a try. I know there are many de Bono devotees out there, but honestly every book I’ve tried of his has gone unfinished up until now. I’m not sure why that is – perhaps my uncompleted teaching diploma has made me wary (or perhaps just weary) of pedagogy. That said, I’m enjoying this one.

How’s your 2012 been so far?
