My request to keep this particular birthday low-key seemed to have been noted until the other day when Keira announced she would like a three-tier birthday cake.
She’d even drawn her ‘concept’ of what she wanted this cake to look like:
“Honey, that just isn’t going to happen. No way, no how.”
“Why not?”
“For one thing, it’s fancier than my own wedding cake.”
My mother – who happened to make and decorate my own wedding cake, and has arguably more authority and right to talk on the subject than I do – just happens to be visiting at the moment and spoke up to say that she would make the cake.
Excellent!
“Thank you,” I said. “But keep it to one layer, please.”

In my caption to the Instagram picture I added, ‘In my day, teevee sticks made football ovals boundaries on a cake. Now, it’s a Plants vs Zombies fence. ZEITGEIST.’
Ultimately, Keira was unsure what the cake actually was. Riley was adamant it was some sort of zombie citadel. Oh, did I mention it was marble cake? Made from scratch?
Mums are awesome.

On this spirit of this occasion, let’s look over a conversation Adam and I had the other day.
“Come down the street for a walk with me,” he said.
“Okay, why?”
“Just because…”
We were halfway along when I asked where we were headed.
“I want to go to the jewellery shop.”
“Why?”
“I want to get something for Keira.”
“Um – dude? When was the last time you went to the jewellers for me?”
“Well… uh. That’s not important.”
“TEN YEARS AGO.”
“Not that long…”
“TEN YEARS AGO.”

Happy eighth birthday, my darling. This morning you jumped into bed with me and said, “Only two more years until I’m ten!”
