Alternate title: What I’m Reading August 2012 – the New York version
How much reading did I get done on the plane after all the preparation I went through before leaving?
Zero. Nothing.
Not unless you could the countless scrolling through the entertainment channels at one’s disposal, reading what movies and television shows were on offer. I could write a whole post about that – how I watched Annie Hall in preparation for arrival in New York, and then Tootsie in leaving it. That The Woman in Black is terrible (and I’m sorry to report this, given I have a bit of a crush on Daniel Radcliffe).
And how The Deer Hunter reaches in and pulls out your still-beating heart. Christopher Walken deserved that Oscar.
Anyway, once in the US, my spending habits were on the modest side – however my weakness, as ever, was books. Those I got are above, except Bring up the Bodies, which I put on the Kindle the day before leaving. I’m past halfway now.
I got Legends of the Chelsea Hotel at a Barnes and Noble down in Greenwich Village and it is one of those light-historical-slash-gossip-peppered books that satisfy one’s curiosity about a place. The Lost Art of Walking is, you guessed it, about walking, specifically how and why it is such a pleasurable pastime, which famous people, all-round high achievers and strange folk were known for their walking proclivities. Those parts were great – the personal narrative of the author and his experience with walking, less so.
And I, Lucifer will come as no surprise to those who know I have a weakness for Glen Duncan’s work.
What else did I buy?
This piece of eye candy.
Just, because…. well, really. I don’t think I need to explain.
