I’m torn about the Olympics.
I love the Olympics. Really, I do. The Sydney 2000 Olympics was one of the greatest pleasures of my life. It was a pleasure and a privilege to live there at the time, especially since we moved shortly after it had finished.
But I don’t know…this year, I’m concerned for everyone’s safety. I’m concerned about certain issues surrounding human rights being overlooked or neglected. I’m sad it’s not ‘only’ going to be about the sport – which I know is rather a disingenuous statement: it’s like saying the Oscars are ‘only’ about the art and not the politics, too. I hope I’m wrong.
Has it ever only been ‘about’ the sport alone? I wonder. But that’s another subject.
Let’s focus on today: today, in the spirit of all that’s good and hopeful about the ancient tradition, we had a pre-Olympics party.
Note the awesome homemade ‘torches’.
{Thanks, nanna.}
Right, well, it’s 6.30pm-ish now. Pretty soon we’ll settle in to watch the opening ceremony. Fingers crossed the whole shebang – over the next two weeks – goes off without a hitch.
